Camping at Shady Grove – Creekside Men’s Ministry

The Men’s Ministry at Creekside organized (thanks Paul Schmidt!) a camping trip Thursday July 7 through Saturday July 9. We camped at Shady Grove Campground, in one of the group campsites. The Comella’s (minus Rikki) arrived early on Thursday and stayed through Saturday. The group site was nice – lots of close sites, with a nice covered pavilion. There was a really nice cove with a sandy beach just beyond the pavilion. On Friday night, the group enjoyed a large campfire (almost a bonfire?) and we had great conversation, story telling and smores.

David Heslin brought his ski boat and spent most of the weekend on the water with the kids and their dads. Not sure how much money he sunk into gas for the three days we were there… I am grateful for him doing that as Matthew, Derek and Sarah had a great time with their friends. I’ll admit to having a good time too. Although David did his best to make me fly off the tube, I managed to hold on through many series of wakes. Fishing was pretty good too. All the kids caught at least one fish. Sarah seemed to get a lot with nightcrawlers, but Matthew got the biggest fish of all the Comella’s. And Sarah’s friend, Meredith, was able to catch a fish, too. Randy cooked it up for breakfast on Saturday morning. I think that’s the first time I had a taste of Lake Lanier’s fish. Yum! Breakfast on Saturday morning was fantastic. Lots of food, with most of the guys cooking and eating in the pavilion. The weather was hot and humid – we’re grateful for our air conditioned RV. However, we had to take some slack from the tent campers who sweated all night and got doused in a thunderstorm on Friday night. That’s OK – at least we got good, COOL sleep! (We also received accolades from Andrew Spenner who enjoyed the “white noise” created by our fan running on the AC all night.) A quick note about the camper: The camper has a problem with the electrical connection that’s between the rear bunk and the bathroom. It must have gotten crushed when lowering the roof on previous trips. I completely removed the connector, since it is broken (it’s in the ashtray of my truck). The connections are now being held together by electrical tape. It’s not a permanent fix, but at least the contacts are touching now. It seems that the only things on that part of the circuit are the bathroom light and the modular light that can be connected over the table. If those lights won’t work, first check the breaker box, then the wiring. The best way to get to the wiring is to stand in the bathroom, face the rear bunk and look for the zipper in the canvas that is on the right and top, just below the hard roof. Unzip the zipper and the connector is outside, just to the rear of the zipper. Read More

Shady Grove Campground

June 26 through June 30, 2008

Stayed at #26 by the lake, up a hill, facing west.

Terrible spot for backing in the trailer. It’s backwards! We figured it out though and loved it.

#29 is our favorite spot. Get it next time.

Thunderstorms all weekend, but we risked putting up the canopy. It survived 3 storms, but the 4th one got it. Oops. It slammed the top and side. Sarah was scared.

The boys played with a big styrofoam block that forwarded ashore.

Good times! Read More
